COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF TERMINALIA CHEBULA AND CHLORHEXIDINE ORAL RINSE AS AN ANTI CARIES AGENT - AN IN VIVO RESEARCH STUDY

Abstract
Oral rinses, such as Chlorhexidine mouth wash has been used for decades, however, is not advisable in all instances, especially in children below 12 years of age where it remains contraindicated. On the other hand, Terminalia chebula has proved to be a potent anti inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, antienzymatic, antifungal, antihelmentic and a powerful astringent drug. T. chebula however on addition of a suitable flavoured base can do, much for the cause of prevention of dental caries. This study was aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of commercially marketed Chlorhexidine oral rinse with that of an aqueous extract of Terminalia chebula as an anti-caries agent. Materials and Methods: 18 children of the age groups of 6 -13 years were screened for the study. Main outcome measures: paired ‘t’ test, ANOVA test. The results indicate that Terminalia chebula can suitably replace Chlorhexidine as a mouthrinse especially in children.
