Assessment of effect of Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica, Wall) in different Doshika Atisara in Infants: A Clinical Study

Abstract
Introduction:The incidence and risk of diarrheal diseases is highest among the children particularly in infants younger than one year. Although, Atisara (~diarrhea) along with a number of drugs for its treatment has been described in Ayurveda, but it become arduous to decide which one drug is more effective on particular Dosha specific diarrhea. Aim of study: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of syrup Kutaja(Holarrhenaantidysenterica, Wall) in Dosha specific infantile Atisara.
Material and Methods:30 infants suffering from acute diarrhea, irrespective to sex, were registered by considering predefined exclusion and inclusion criteria after getting written informed consent from the parents. With drop of two cases, finally, 28 infants were grouped on the basis of characteristics of stool and sign/symptoms portrayed for the Doshikaatisara. The trial drug Kutaja was given to infant in dose of 15mg/kg/dose, 8 hourly for two days. Infants were evaluated at 24 and 48 hours on follow ups. Observations and Result:Analysis of gathered data divulges that Kutaja has significant effect in reducing frequency, foul smell and mucus in stool. It also subsides pain in abdomen as well as improve the consistency of stool
