EFFICACY OF A STANDARDISED SAFE UNANI CODED DRUG LIPOTAB IN HYPERCHOLESTREMIA AND INVOLVEMENT OF ELEMENT ZINC IN ITS MECHANISM

Abstract
We have shown that the serum zinc++ levels were reduced significantly in 56 hypercholestremic patients p<0.01 when compared to 121 normal controls. The cut off point for abnormal cholesterol level was >250 mg%. Lipotab a Unani coded polypharmaceutical having Nepata hindostana Allium sativum and Curcuma longa as its ingredients was prescribed for 3 months in suitable doses in a follow up study on 13 patients of hypercholestremia with cholesterol level >275 mg%. It reduced the cholesterol level p<0.01 as well as the serum zinc level p<0.05. The maximum daily therapeutic dose of Lipotab was 50 mg/kg orally in humans. The drug showed no mortality up to the dose of 25.6 G/kg P.O. in mice. In isolated Langendorff heart preparation antagonism, by Zn++, of cardiotoxic affect of Cd++, Hg++ and Pb++; elements which are implicated in pathophysiology of Atherosclerosis, was demonstrated. In Anaesthetised dogs Lipotab showed a puissant hypotensive effect when given intravenously in 100 mg/kg doses. The present study thus vindicates a role of Zn++ in Hypercholestremia an essential accompaniment of Human Atherosclerosis and in the mechanism of beneficial hypocholestremic action of Lipotab, a safe Unani formulation.
