THE FIRST SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY

VINIT SHARMA.

Abstract
The history of human embryology is a short and precise one. According to the available literature the first scientific studies of the human embryo in its various stages of development were conducted around the early nineteenth century. Prior to that various theories and hypotheses ranging from spontaneous generation of living things to the hypotheses of pangenesis and preformation theories of spermists and ovists had been confusing the scientific community. Wolf and Bear in 1928 propounded the theory of Epigenesis and for the first time they established that the human embryo passed through a number of stages, before being born. However, the Bhagwat Mahapurana – (a very ancient book by Indian Saints and Philosopher Scientists) – contains a detailed and truly scientific account of the stages of development of human embryo. The description are in accordance with the latest text books on Human Embryology. This established the Bhagwat Mahapurana as the first authentic and scientific text on Human Embryology.
