V.K. JOSHI.

Abstract
The Medhya-Rasayana Dravyas (Psyche-Somato Drugs), as a separate Entity, is entirely a new subject to western system of medicine. The word Medhya comprises of the trait of – (1) Dhi or Buddhi (Intelligence), (2) Dhrati (power of retention) and (3) Smrati (Memory). These three functions are related with human mind or psyche. And the word Rasayana means rejuvenation of body or Somato. In chikitsa-sthana of Charak-Samahita, the Medhya-Rasayana Dravyas, their pharmaceutical preparations and mode of administration to achieve the Medhya-Rasayana action are discussed. The specially mentioned drugs are – Mandukaparni, Yastimadhu, Guduci and Sankhapuspi. Out of all four drugs, Sankhapuspi is believed to the best Medyha-Rasayana. Regarding their mechanism of action, they exert their affect on mind (local actions) and as well as body (General actions) and hence they are dual acting drugs.
