ASSESSMENT OF EFFECT OF MANDURA BHASMA IN IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA OF CHILDREN

Abstract
Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality world wide. In Ayurvedic literature Mandura bhasma has been advised as the best drug for the Pandu roga. Out of 24 registered anemic children 18 cases were selected having the age group between 5 months - 12 years irrespective of sex and having the signs and symptoms of pallor, lethargy, reduced appetite, pica, irritability etc. The drug Mandura bhasma was given in a dose of 4 mg/kg/dose 12 hourly for a total period of 30 days. The complete Hemogram, Serum Iron, TIBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC etc. were carried out to study the effect of Mandura bhasma on the disease. The clinical response as well as investigations were observed based on the 15th day (1st Follow up) and 30th day (2nd Follow up) after registration. Result of the study was found very encouraging as the change in mean hemoglobin, mean serum iron, mean TIBC during the total period of therapy were 2.16± 0.66, 42.28±19.17, 225.85±96.55 respectively. So it can be said that the effect of Mandura bhasma seems to be equally effective in comparison to available iron salt-ferrous sulphate for the treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia.
