COMPARISON OF PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTY OF DIFFERENT MODES OF SUKUMARAM YOGAM – An Ayurvedic formulation for the Management of Gynecological Disorders

SRUTHI C. V, SINDHU. A..

Abstract
Sukumaram yoga (SY) effectively manages many of the gynecological disorders.
Based on the clinical application, its different pharmaceutical modes like Kashayam (SK)(water
extracts), Gritham (SG)(medicated ghee), Arishtam (SA)(aqua alcoholic preparations) and Lehyam
(SL)(semi solid preparation with jaggery as base) are popularly used. Free radical contributes to
many of the gynecological conditions. As most of the secondary metabolites in medicinal plants
are antioxidants, thus various herbal combinations play an important role in alleviating these
gynecological conditions. Objective: The present study aims at comparing the phytochemicals and
anti oxidant property of these formulations and an attempt is made to correlate their antioxidant
property with their clinical indications. Materials and methods: Qualitative phytochemicals tests
were done according to Harborne and Sazada for the identification of secondary metabolites and
the antioxidant properties were estimated according to Blois by 2,2 diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazine
radical scavenging activity. Result: SK exhibited the highest antioxidant property (EC50-104 μg/ml)
followed by SA with an EC 50 value of 280μg/ml. SL (480μg/ml) & SG (2400μg/ml) comes next in the
study. It is observed that a good number of phytoconstituents were present in the gritham preparation.
Conclusion: The findings on the antioxidant and the phytochemicals evaluation in the various
modes of SY substantiate the clinical indications of the formulations in gynecological disorders.
