Abstract
Herbal cosmetics are well known all over the world for its acceptability to manage
skin properties for a longtime. The incorporation of fresh herb in a stable form of cosmetic is a
difficult task. In the present study we have attended to make a stable formulation of aloe gel which
is known for its high cosmetic value. Several herbal cosmetic multiple emulsion (F1-F10) composing
of different percentage of Aloe vera, soybean oil, vitamin E, rose water were formulated by two
stage emulsification method using Span 80 (1-10%) for primary w/o emulsion then for reemulsion
o/w using Tween 80 (1-5%) as emulsifier; w/o/w multiple emulsion are more effective than simple
emulsion with a continuous aqueous phase and are more pleasant to use than simple emulsion with
the continuous oily phase because of less greasy feel. Formulated multiple emulsions were
characterized by physicochemical and different safety parameters such as microscopic observation
for multiple structure, globule size (39±3 - 53±3 μm), viscosity (49±7 - 77±8 centipoise), pH
(4.5±0.7 - 6.5±0.5), creaming volume (22±0.1 - 90±0.4%), skin irritation test (no irritation),
stability (no color change and no phase separation) and spreadibility (61±0.6 - 70±0.5%). All herbal
cosmetic multiple emulsions possess good rheological properties with skin compliance’s and has
sufficient stability, among all F5 is found to be most stable.

Key words: Multiple emulsion, Aloe vera, Vitamin E, Stability, Medicinal plants
