AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION: THERAPEUTIC TARGETS AND POSSIBLE ROLE OF AYURVEDA

Abstract
Age related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a leading cause of blindness in developed countries. The prevalence of ARMD is rising due to rise in aged population. Despite of better understanding of its pathogenesis, promising therapeutic agents are yet not available.Therefore, preventive strategies are likely to be more helpful and should be emphasized. New Approaches are needed to slow the progression and limit the damage caused by this disease.Ayurveda is well recognized for its role in aging related problems. An integrative approach, taking into account the knowledge of both Ayurveda and Biomedicine, to manage this problem may be more rewarding. The integrative approach need to be based upon pathophysiological correlations between both systems. This paper reviews the pathophysiology of ARMD with a view to understand therapeutic targets and discusses the possible role of Ayurveda in its management.
