Clinical Study on Role and Functional Utility of Srotomoola w.s.r. to Vapavahana

Anjali Goyal, Prof. (Dr.) Baldev Kumar.

Abstract
Introduction (Background): Exploration of knowledge of Srotomoola (site of origin) on clinical basis is still needed. The clinical utility of the concept of Srotomoola of a Srotas (micro channels) has not been so explicated in Ayurveda Samhitas. It has not been immediately obvious or entirely known. Affliction of the Srotas leads to the vitiation of the Dhatu (tissue elements) residing there or passing through them. Hypothesis: It was postulated that if, treatment was given on Moola (root) of a Srotas of a particular Dhatu, given medicines act directly on that disease. Even then the Dhatu Pradoshaja Vikara (disease produced due to vitiation of tissue elements) of that particular Srotas will get treated. In that way role of Srotomoola in the treatment or pathology of respective Srotas, or respective Dhatu Pradoshaja Vikara will get established.
Aims: To establish the role and functional utility of Srotomoola (Vapavahana –tissue-organ responsible for transportation of lipids) in the management of respective Dhatu Pradoshaja Vikara (Sthaulya ~ obesity).
Material and Methods: During second half of 2012, fifteen clinically diagnosed Sthaulya patients were selected from Aarogyashala and Bambaiwala hospital, NIA, Jaipur, Rajasthan (India). It was randomized single blind clinical study. Patients were given drug acted directly on Srotomoola and not directly mentioned in classical texts to the respective disease.
Results: Statistically significant result was observed in subjective parameters where as observations were highly significant in objective parameters in Sthaulya. No significant changes were seen in most of the laboratory parameters. There was marked improvement in 20% of patients, 46.67% got moderately improved whereas 33.33% of them got improved.
Conclusion: This clinical study on role of functional aspect of Srotomoola has shown very encouraging results. It was found to be effective in cure Dhatu Pradoshaja Vikara of that particular Srotas. Concept of Srotomoola Chikitsa can surely play an important role in Ayurvedic management of disease.

Key words: Dhatu Pradoshaja Vikara; Srotas; Srotomoola; Sthaulya; Vapavahana.
