EFFECT OF REPEATED SAUNA BATH ON BODY WEIGHT, RECTAL TEMPERATURE AND BODY COMPOSITION

Abstract
Objective: Sauna bath is a form of dry heat exposure. The physiological responses of a single session of sauna are well described but less information is available on the effects of repeated sauna exposure. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of five sessions of sauna on body weight, rectal temperature and body composition. Design: Experimental study with same subject design. Setting: Study was conducted in the Health Department of Guru Nanak Dev University. Subjects: 20 healthy males volunteered to participate in the study. Intervention: Participants were exposed to the dry heat of sauna at (70±2°C) for 15 minutes for a period of 5 consecutive days. Pre and post recording of body weight, rectal temperature and body composition parameters were done after each sauna exposure on all the days. Outcome measures: Body weight, rectal temperature and body composition parameters. Results: After each sauna exposure there was a significant decrease in body weight and a significant elevation in rectal temperature (p<0.05) observed on all 5 days. Conclusion: It was thus concluded that 15 minutes of dry sauna exposure can significantly reduce body weight with elevation of rectal temperature, but does not affect body composition parameters.
