EVALUATION OF ANTIPROTEINURIC AND RENOPROTECTIVE EFFECT OF PUNARNAVA (BOERHAVIA DIFFUSA LINN.) IN DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY

Abstract
The study aims to compare the antiproteinuric effect of ACE inhibitor with
Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa Linn.) in diabetic nephropathy (DN). Methodology: Study included
25 patients with type 2 DM with nephropathy. Patients having DM (type-I or type-II) with
proteinuria >500mg/day, serum creatinine <5mg/dl were included in the study. Patients were divided
in 2 groups. All patients were followed up for period of 6 months and subjected to clinical
examination and investigations at monthly interval. At the end of 6 months, there were 14 patients
in group I, 11 in group II, who had completed follow up. All patients were subjected to detailed
clinical examination and hematological, biochemical tests including urine routine/microscopy and 24
hour urine protein. Results: Of the 25 patients who completed the study age of patients in group
I ranged from 40 to 70 years (mean 60.78±6.37), group II 45-73 (mean 60.27±9.00) years. Common
presenting feature was edema, anorexia, weakness and vomiting. Although 24 hour urine protein
decreased in Punarnava group after 6 months but decrease was not statistically significant. When
compared to Ramipril group had significant decrease in 24 hour urine protein at 6 months
(p<0.001). Conclusion: Thus in our study Punarnava showed decrease in 24 hour urine protein
after 6 months follow up although difference was not statistically significant. A larger prospective
study will be required to confirm these findings.
