PHARMACOGNOSTIC AND PHYSICO-CHEMICAL EVALUATION OF BELLIS PERENNIS L. – A HOMOEOPATHIC DRUG

Abstract
Pharmacognostic and physico-chemical standardisation of Bellis perennis L. a potent
homoeopathic drug is presented. The leaves are fleshy, spatulate or obovate, arising as a basal tuft
from rhizome. Roots are stout and firm. The epidermal cells of leaf in surface are wavy to sinuate.
Stomata occur on both sides. Leaf surface possess uniseriate conical hair. Midvein shows an adaxial
groove. Mesophyll is undifferentiated with feeble patches of palisade. Aerenchymatous spaces
occur towards adaxial side at midvein. Vascular bundle is single, bicollateral in midvein enclosed
by endodermis and pericycle. The leaf base is succulent and sheathed. Rhizome is up to 0.6 cm
thick, oval to rounded with slight angles. Vascular tissue consists of a ring of collateral v. bundles.
Leaf trace bundles and branch traces occur outside the vascular ring. Roots up to 0.7 cm thick,
oval, oblong or elliptic in outline with undulations. Cortex is interspersed with secretory cavities.
V. bundles are bicollateral and appear as a chain. Root gap bundles and trace bundles occur outside
the vascular ring. The physico-chemical parameters of raw drugs viz., extractive values, ash values,
formulation besides alcohol content, weight per mL, total solids, TLC and UV studies are given
for the mother tincture.
