STUDY ON THE ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECT OF KSHARASUTRA TREATMENT IN FISTULA IN ANO

Abstract
Fistula in ano could be treated effectively with the Ksharasutra, surgical linen
impregnated with Ayurvedic material alkaline in nature. The thread works as a chemical cautery,
it cuts and heals the tract simultaneously. It is also reported that the recurrence rate of fistula in
ano has came down significantly with this procedure There are different theories in existence
claiming the mode of action of the thread in fistula in ano. They vary from the mere mechanical
action to the antibacterial activity of the thread. In this present study an effort is made to determine
the effect of Ksharasutra on its antibacterial action when applied in the fistula in ano. The studies
carried out thrice in each case during the regimen of the Ksharasutra treatment. The results of this
study show that the bacterial status of fistulous tract is insignificantly altered in all the cases. It
indicates that the alkaline material liberated in the tract of fistula though shows minimal antibacterial
action; it is not the mode of action of the thread over the fistulous tract.
