Abstract
INTRODUCTION:
Background: Acharya Sushruta has mentioned the fundamental and applied principles of Shalya Chikitsa in foremost text of Surgery - the Sushruta Samhita. Despite the root contribution of Sushruta in surgical practice, it is largely unrecognized by the world. Very few publications highlight his role in development of surgical practice in separate branches. It is need of hour to understand contribution of Sushruta in development and documentation of basic knowledge in surgical practice, surgical techniques and post operative care in ancient surgical practice.
Methods: With the help of Classical texts along with their commentaries and modern medicine books by hand search method, a sincere effort is made to understand the applied aspects of ancient principles of surgery and their validation in contemporary surgical methods.
Results: In Agropaharaniya Adhyaya, Acharya Sushruta has quoted Essential principles of pre, during and post operative procedures in summarized transcript manner within 41 verses. Starting from materials collection to sterilization, types of surgeries, types of incision, hospitalization, analgesia, emergency medical care and its importance in general, contemporary concept of nil by mouth pre operatively - are summarized in this chapter as primary knowledge. Classical practice of surgery in Ayurveda is described briefly in this chapter by Acharya Sushruta.

Conclusion: Importance of Essential knowledge of pre-during-post operative care has been remained mandatory since early age. This paper is to acknowledge global readers about foremost documentation by Sushruta regarding baseline care in surgery and its root contribution in well developed contemporary branch of surgical practice.
