Abstract
Introduction: Lehana (electuaries) is a unique concept mentioned by Vriddha Jivaka to extend the required nutrition and immunity during the process of growth and development in the children. Various single herbal drugs and compound preparations are mentioned with their indications and contraindications in the chapter entitled Lehadhyaya. The drugs mentioned in this chapter are mainly used along with Ghrita (Ghee), Madhu (Honey), Swarna (Gold) and other Medhya dravyas (nootropic herbs). The main aim of Lehanakarma (action of licking therapy) is to enhance the growth & development of child by providing sufficient nutrition and to protect child from various diseases. Aim: In the present review, single drugs mentioned in Lehadhyaya of Kashyapsamhita were compiled, critically analysed and presented scientifically along with their probable mode of action based on various reported research works. Results and Discussion:Various single drugs like Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Shatapushpa (Anethum sowa), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Danti (Baliospermum montanum), Nagabala (Sida veronicaefolia), Trivrit (Operculina turpethum), Samanga (Rubia cordifolia) and Baladwaya are mentioned in the context of Lehana. These drugs are administered with Madhu and Sarpi, which act as vehicle (Anupana) and increase the palatability of the drug. Most of the drugs possess properties like Tikta- Kashaya-Katu rasa, Katu/Madhura vipaka, and Medhya (nootropic), Deepana (appetizer), Rasayana (rejuvenator) properties. Majority of these drugs are proven for their immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities, as well on learning and memory power enhancing properties. Conclusion: Different single herbal drugs explained in Lehadhyaya acts as general health promoter and in specific they enhance intelligence, digestion, metabolism, immunity, physical strength and complexion.
