PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION OF INULA ROYLEAMA ROOTS

MUSHTAQ A. QURISHI.

Abstract
Inula royleana (Compositae) is a stout herb growing in western Himalayas at an altitude of 7-1100 ft. Roots of this species are known to exhibit hypotensive activity and stimulate tone and peristalic moments of intestines. Earlier investigations on the roots of this species have revealed the presence of alkaloids and diterpenes. In this communication we report the isolation of three sesqui terpene lactones designated as IR-1, mp-78-790 IR-3, mp-171-1720 and characterized by spectroscopic and chemical methods as alantolactone, isoalantolactone, 11, 13 dihydroisoalantolac tone and sitosterol mp-136-37.
