CLINICAL STUDY OF PIPPALI VARDHMAN RASAYAN IN THE MANAGEMENT OF JALODAR WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO REFRACTORY CIRRHOTIC ASCITES

Abstract
Background: Most common manifestation of liver dysfunction is Ascites and most
common cause of Ascites is advanced liver disease. It is known as Jalodar or dakodar in Ayurvedic
system. There is no specific treatment mentioned in other pathies but in Ayurveda Acharya
Charaka has described its treatment by Pippali Vardhman Rasayan (PVR). Ascites as a disease
has been described extensively in Ayurvedic literature along with medical treatment and surgical
procedures related to the management of this condition. Diet restriction is an important and
interesting feature of the management of this condition. Objective: To evaluate the role of Pippali
Vardhman Rasayan(PVR) in the management of Jalodar w.s.r. refractory cirrhotic Ascites. Material
and Method: All patients with confirmed ascites are kept on an exclusive milk diet for a minimum
period of six months, followed by milk and other liquid diet for the next three months, and
combined milk and light diet for the next three months. Fluid intake in the form of water is totally
restricted. For this study we register the total 24 patients from I.P.D. and O.P.D. of S.S. Hospital,
Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi India. Result: Out of 24 patients, 20 patients completed the
course, 1 patient died and 3 quit in between the treatment. Overall effect of therapy on Ascites
was grade I resolution 8(40%), Ascites grade II resolution 5(25%) Ascites grade III resolution
4(20%) and unchanged 3(15%), was observed.
