EFFECT OF URTICA DIOICA AND PICRORHIZA SCROPHULARIIFLORA EXTRACT ON STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED TYPE 1 DIABETIC MODEL RATS

Abstract
This experiment evaluated the effect of the aqueous extract of Urtica dioica leaves
and the ethanolic extract of Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora rhizome on the glycemic and lipidemic
status in type 1 diabetic model rats. Adult Long Evans male rats, bred at BIRDEM animal house,
Dhaka, Bangladesh were used in this study. Type 1 diabetic model rats were produced with a single
intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin using standardized method used in BIRDEM. Serum
glucose was estimated by the glucose-oxidase (GOD-PAP) method, serum lipid profiles (cholesterol,
triglycerides, HDL) were measured by enzymatic colorimetric (cholesterol oxidase / peroxidase)
method. Significant blood glucose lowering effect of U. dioica (p<0.001) and P. scrophulariiflora
(p<0.05) were observed in type 1 diabetic model rats. Body weight was decreased significantly
(p<0.02) in the U. dioica treated group. Triglycerides (TG) and cholesterol level were significantly
low (p<0.01) in the U. dioica treated group. Decreased level of TG and cholesterol were also
observed in P. scrophulariiflora extract treated group, but was not significant. Hence the study
showed that semi-chronic administration of the water extract of U. dioica and the ethanolic extract
of P. scrophulariiflora improved the glycemic and lipidemic status in type 1 diabetic model rats.
