Anti-tussive activity of Arseno-Mercurial preparation in Sulphur Dioxide induced Cough in mice

Abstract
Introduction: Sameera Pannaga Rasa (SPR) is arseno-mercurial preparation which contains Parada (Mercury), Gandhaka (Sulfur), Hartala (Orpiment), Somala (White Arsenic) and Manahshila (Realgar) The present study is carried out to evaluate anti-tussive activity of two different samples of Sameera Pannaga Rasa in Sulphur dioxide (SO2) induced cough in mice. Materials and Methods: Samples of Sameera Pannaga Rasa were prepared by following standard manufacturing procedures mentioned in Ayurvedic Formulary of India and coded as SPR-T and SPR-U. Selected animals were randomly divided into four groups of 6 animals each. Test drugs were administered orally at a dose of 7.8 mg/kg. Recodex [Codeine phosphate (2mg/ml) and Chlorpheniramine Maleate (0.8mg/ml)] is used as standard drug. Results: Both the test drugs have shown significant (P<0.001) anti-tussive activity against sulphur dioxide induced cough reflex. SPR-T significantly reduced the number of cough reflexes by 42.47%, whereas SPR-U reduced it to 35.83%. Conclusion: Based on the observations; it is concluded that SPR can be potentially used to alleviate cough.
